Schwarzman and Gray speak out and up on gender diversity

This month, Blackstone’s Steve Schwarzman, Chairman, CEO & Co-Founder, and Jon Gray, Global Head of Real Estate, discussed initiatives to increase gender diversity as a critical part of the firm’s search for talent.

Steve Schwarzman, speaking at the Wall Street Journal’s annual Women in the Workplace dinner, shared how Blackstone started addressing the issue by expanding its applicant pool. The percentage of women in Blackstone’s incoming analyst classes has now doubled to nearly 40 percent, up from 18 percent in 2013.

Jon Gray, who sits on the Women’s Initiative steering committee, told Yahoo Finance’s Julia LaRoche that Blackstone Real Estate has seen the number of senior-level women nearly double since 2012 and the number of women summer analyst hires reach its largest percentage ever the past two years.

Spearheaded by Joan Solotar, Head of Private Wealth Solutions and External Relations, Blackstone’s Women’s Initiative was launched in 2011 with a two-fold goal – recruit more talented women and improve their retention and career development within the firm. Its work continues today under the leadership of Beth Chartoff, Head of Investor Relations and Business Development for GSO Capital Partners.
