New York, January 31, 2019 – Blackstone (NYSE:BX), through funds it manages on behalf of its real estate investors, and Ivanhoé Cambridge, a real estate subsidiary of Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ), today proudly announced that Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village (Stuy Town) are the first communities in New York state to have been awarded LEED Platinum certification, as part of the new U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED for Communities program.

Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village are the first multi-family communities certified by LEED under this new designation and the first set of private communities certified at the Platinum level.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a global green building rating program that enables cities, communities, and buildings to measure and track sustainability, evaluating 14 key metrics that include energy, water, waste, education, and health. The Platinum rating is the highest level achievable.

Ken Caplan, Global Co-Head of Blackstone Real Estate, said: “We are honored to have received this certification and we’re incredibly proud of our commitment to sustainability at Stuy Town. Stuy Town has been the ideal place to test and implement innovative green solutions as we work towards increasing energy efficiency throughout our portfolio.”

Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO of USGBC, said: “Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village serve as a prime example of the measurable outcomes that can come from innovative sustainability strategies and resilient goals. Their projects are leading the way and we couldn’t be more pleased to partner with them in helping USGBC achieve its mission.”

In 2017, Stuy Town announced the largest private multi-family residential rooftop solar project in the United States.  Full installation of the system is nearly complete and electricity is already being generated on-site. Other Stuy Town initiatives include compost waste pickup, LED lighting installation, high efficiency hot water heat exchangers, elevator shaft louvers to minimize heat loss, domestic water flow control valves, and a centralized control of steam heating distribution. Since 2007, Stuy Town has reduced on-site greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent and is the first multifamily building in NYC to have received an ENERGY STAR certification.

Rick Hayduk, CEO of StuyTown Property Services, said: “Becoming the first LEED Platinum certified community in New York is a reflection of our commitment to the environment and our desire to simply leave the world a better place after each day.”

Stuy Town is the largest rental apartment complex in the U.S., with 11,200+ multifamily units in 56 buildings across 80 acres in Manhattan’s East Village.
