January Recruitment Primer: Interview Tips

Following last month’s networking guide, this month Blackstone’s recruitment team offers an interview primer to give students some helpful tips as they begin the interview process for summer internships and full-time positions. “An interview is an opportunity to go beyond your resume and advertise what you bring to the table. Be prepared, be yourself, and show genuine curiosity,” says Bronwen Baumgardner, a Vice President on Blackstone’s Human Resources team.

  • Know your resume. Be ready to speak convincingly and at length about how each facet of your resume makes you a compelling candidate. If you cannot do this for a particular bullet point, reconsider its inclusion.
  • Dress for success. When it comes to attire, err on the side of caution. A professional appearance will set the tone for a good first impression.
  • Avoid canned answers. While it’s helpful to familiarize yourself with standard questions, keep in mind that this is an opportunity to show that you can think on your feet and answer questions authentically.
  • Do your homework. Have a developed understanding of how the company and position fit your interests and skill-set. The conversation will be much more interesting for both you and your interviewer if you arrive already knowledgeable about the work at hand.
  • Be confident, not arrogant. Highlight past accomplishments to show what you can offer, but remember to avoid exaggeration and be frank about areas for future development.
  • Ask questions. Prepare at least three thoughtful questions at the conclusion of the interview that demonstrate your engagement with and excitement about the opportunity.
  • Send your thanks. It can never hurt to send a brief thank you email. As many candidates follow this advice, don’t be discouraged if you do not receive a response.
