China Development Bank (CDB), was founded in 1994 and is a government policy-oriented bank in China specializing in financing infrastructure, industrials, technology and key national projects.
Barclays PLC is a UK-based financial services group engaged in retail and commercial banking, investment banking and investment management.
CDB purchased a minority equity stake in Barclays plc, with the new capital to be used to support Barclay’s purchase of ABN Amro. CDB’s initial investment was £1.5 billion, with a subsequent placement of more than £5.0 billion.
The investment gave CDB a stake in one of the world’s largest financial institutions, access to Barclays’ intellectual capital and expertise, and a platform for future joint ventures in China and globally. Barclay’s benefited from CDB’s investment by gaining access to the Chinese market, validation of its strategy from a sophisticated investor and added flexibility.
